"More Than Just Volunteering/KAYL 한국어 봉사" by Audrey Lee
For the last few months, I have been volunteering as an assistant through KAYL (Korean American Young Leaders) and helped teach Korean in a beginner class of foreigners. While volunteering, I have learned how to help improve the students' Korean while being supportive. During the weekly 2-hour lessons, there were usually 2-3 short breakout room sessions. After being taught a concept, the students would practice what they learned in the breakout rooms, and I helped correct pronunciation or answer any questions they had. Since the teacher usually uploaded the lesson in advance, the assistant teachers and students could prepare before class. Having an opportunity to do so was helpful since I knew what to expect. As foreigners may be very unfamiliar with Korean, it can be hard to explain pronunciation or grammar structures based on English. Instead of comparing everything with English, it is much more effective to explain grammar concepts based on individual Korean letters or words. It is also helpful for the students to practice pronouncing each letter separately, then gradually connect the consonants and vowels. While students may ask repetitive questions and make slow progress, kindly guiding them to the best of my abilities has paid off at the end of the 11-week session. Through this program, I have learned how to be patient while teaching a new language and continuously support students toward improvement.
지난 몇 달 동안 KAYL (Korean American Young Leaders)을 통해 한국어 기초반에서 선생님을 도와 보조자로써 외국인에게 한글을 가르치는 봉사를 하게 되었습니다. 이 봉사를 통해 수업 중에 어떻게 하면 한국어를 배우는 학생들에게 격려하며 도움을 줄 수 있는지를 저 또한 배우게 되었습니다. 매주 있는 2시간 수업에서, 선생님께서 학생들에게 먼저 한글을 가르치신 후, 5분에서 10분씩 2-3명의 개별방을 줌에서 만들어 저를 포함한 보조자가 각각 학생들의 발음 연습을 도와주고 교정해 주었습니다. 문법에 대한 질문이 있을 때도 개별방에서 답변을 해줄 수 있었습니다. 수업 전에 선생님이 구글에 올려놓으신 교제를 미리 공부해서 개별방에서 어떻게 도와줄 수 있는지를 준비할 수 있었습니다. 외국인들에게는 한국어가 매우 생소한 언어일 수가 있어서, 발음과 문장의 구조들을 영어로 매번 대체하거나 비교하기 보다는, 한국어 자체로 설명하는게 더 도움이 될 때가 많았습니다. 기초반 학생들이기에 비슷한 질문이 많고 발전이 더딘 것 같지만, 인내심을 갖고 열심히 도운 결과 11주의 과정이 끝났을 때 학생들의 실력 향상 또한 볼 수 있어서 저 또한 큰 배움이 되었습니다.
